Caring Cities Initiative
Everyone thrives when cities are built around care. We’re helping Ottawa put care at the heart of urban planning and policy, so that spaces and services truly work for all.
What makes a Caring City?
A Caring City is designed to support everyone — including caregivers and the people they look after. It’s a place where:
- No one is left out or left behind
- Spaces are planned around everyday experiences
- Public services focus on health and well-being
- Everyone can afford to live, move around and thrive
For example, this can look like affordable housing, wheelchair-friendly transit, and easy access to grocery stores. There are many ways to build a city around care — such as Barcelona’s Superblocks which offer shared green space and community amenities.
Working Toward a Caring Ottawa
Cities around the world are showing what’s possible when care is a priority. Ottawa has the opportunity to champion the Caring Cities movement in North America, building on the strengths of the city we already love.
CAWI is working with local communities to understand the needs of caregivers and the people they support. We’ll share these insights with decision-makers, helping them build a city that cares for all.
