On June 12th, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women, announced five projects in the Ottawa area that Status of Women Canada is funding to advance gender equality.
Among them, Women Reducing Poverty Together, a new project undertaken by CAWI in partnership with women’s organizations across the city. Over a three year period, CAWI and partners will undertake an intersectional gender analysis of poverty reduction, and work with local institutions to create change. This means taking into account the specificity of women’s experiences in comparison to men’s while considering a diversity of backgrounds and life experiences.
A unique aspect of this project is the identification of three local women leaders who will meet with 150 women from across Canada over the three years to inform local projects and identify national strategies for advancing gender equality. The leaders for this project are: Claudette Commanda, Algonquin elder; Mercy Lawluvi, ED of Immigrant Women Services Ottawa, and Suzanne Doerge, Director, CAWI.
