Women taking Action – Assuming Leadership

Whether women are currently in a training program, have graduated from a program or simply want to make their views known, CAWI provides on-going opportunities for women to have input into City decision making.

  • Women’s Action Forums each year at City Hall, where diverse women learn and share research, information and their views on hot or emerging issues at the City Held at City Hall, once a month, this is a superb way to get to know the City and how it works.
  • Distributes brochures in six languages to inform women of how city government works and why our votes count.
  • Presentations and workshops to community groups.
  • Making city budgets simple by providing easy to understand materials of key issues.
  • Informing and supporting women in presenting deputations. Council members are making decisions on issues that affect women and their families throughout the year. In over 20 meetings since 2004, approximately 120 women have prepared and presented their views such issues as recreation, transportation, housing, skills training and employment, child care and health care to Council members. And of those, about 80% were sharing their views publicly for the first time, ever.
  • Using our creativity, by singing songs or presenting a skit to City Council.

In all these forums, women come together across diversity, French language materials and interpretation are provided and women support and learn from each other.

This made possible thanks to funding from United Way Ottawa.
